Digging The Hole

In all but sandy soils, dig the hole 1 to 2 inches less than the depth of the root ball and two to three times as wide.  Ideally, the wider the hole the better.  Urban soils tend to be compacted which is not condusive to root growth.  Digging a wide hole will make it easier for a young tree to root.

Always scarify around the edge of the hole.  The cracks in the undisturbed soil will add in rooting and help prevent circling roots at the soil enter face.  It is very important not to dig the hole too deep.  Young trees and many mature ones cannot handle soil and moisture around the trunk.  We recommend planting a tree high, which means the root crown is above the grade.
